Standing seam or metal shingles on older Stillwater village homes
The village of Stillwater sits right on the Hudson, and many of its houses are older, on smaller lots, close to the street and close to each other. Steep roofs, dormers, porches and chimneys are common. Each of those is a flashing detail, and flashing is where an old roof leaks and where a new one gets done well or badly.
Both main options fit these houses. Standing seam gives clean vertical lines and keeps every fastener hidden under the seams. Metal shingles are stamped steel or aluminum that look like slate, shake or asphalt, which suits a house where you want the roof to read as traditional from the street. On a roof with lots of dormers and valleys, ask the installer which system handles those details better on your house.
Snow guards for tight village lots
Snow slides off metal. On a farm that's fine. In the village, the eave may be a few feet from your neighbor's driveway, your front walk or the sidewalk. Snow guards hold the snow on the roof so it melts off in small amounts instead of one heavy slide. Put them over every door, walk and driveway, and over any lower roof or porch below.
Barns and outbuildings in rural Stillwater
Outside the village, the town opens up around Saratoga National Historical Park into fields, farms and wooded lots. Properties out here often have a barn, a pole building or a big detached garage, and plenty of them already have ribbed metal that's showing its age.
Exposed-fastener panels leak at the screws as the washers dry out and the screws back off. If the panels are sound, re-screwing and resealing may be all it needs. If they're rusted through, replace them. For an outbuilding you heat or use as a shop, solid decking and underlayment under the new metal keep condensation from dripping on your tools. More on that on our metal barn roof page.
Ice dams on older Stillwater houses
Older homes along the river often have little attic insulation and plenty of air leaks. Heat reaches the roof, melts the snow, and the water refreezes at the cold eaves. Metal sheds snow better than shingles, but ice and water barrier still belongs at the eaves and in the valleys, and fixing the attic ventilation helps any roof.
What drives a Stillwater metal roof quote
Roof size and pitch, panel type, steel gauge and finish, tear-off versus going over, deck repairs, dormers, chimneys and snow guards. A tight village lot can also make access and debris removal part of the price. Our metal roof cost guide walks through each factor. When you're ready, ask for a free quote. Just up the river?
