Steep pitches and dormers on Schuylerville village homes
Schuylerville's houses are older and close together, many with steep roofs, dormers, porches and a chimney or two. Those details decide how a metal roof turns out. Every dormer cheek, valley and chimney needs its own flashing, and that's where you can tell a careful installer from a fast one.
Two good fits for the village:
- Standing seam: vertical panels with raised seams and concealed clips. Clean lines and nothing exposed to the weather.
- Metal shingles: stamped steel or aluminum shaped like slate, shake or asphalt. Good when you want the house to keep a traditional look.
Still deciding whether metal is worth it at all? Our metal roof vs shingles guide lays out the tradeoffs.
Metal roof over shingles in Schuylerville?
Plenty of older homes here already have two or more layers of shingles. Whether metal can go over the existing roof depends on the deck underneath and local code, and the installer or the town building department confirms it. A tear-off costs more up front, but it lets the installer see and fix soft decking, which older houses often have. More on metal roof over shingles.
Farm country around Schuylerville: barns, sheds and farmhouses
The Saratoga Monument stands on its hill above the village, and much of the Town of Saratoga beyond it is farm country. Farmhouses, barns, equipment sheds and garages are a big share of the metal roofing work out here.
Barns usually get ribbed, exposed-fastener panels: they go on fast over purlins and shed snow off a big roof. The tradeoff is the screws. Their rubber washers wear out over time, and loose screws are where most barn leaks start. A barn roof that leaks in a few spots may only need re-screwing and sealing. One that's rusted through needs new panels. Our metal barn roof page covers both.
Snow guards for Schuylerville porches and sidewalks
In the village, a lot of front doors and porches sit close to the sidewalk. When a metal roof lets go of its snow, it comes down all at once. Snow guards above entrances, walkways and porch roofs keep that snow up top until it melts. On a farmhouse, put them over the doors you use every day and over any lower roof that takes the slide.
